NEWS ACCOUNT Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died at age 52, and police said Thursday that his death is being investigated as a possible suicide. Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit, Cornell's representative Brian Bumbery said in a statement to The Associated Press. Cornell had performed a Detroit concert with Soundgarden that night. Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family are in shock. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and have asked for privacy. Gay German Nurse Niels Hoegel Killed At Least 84 Patients: Police

A nurse who was convicted of killing patients in Germany with overdoses of heart medication is now believed to have killed at least 84 people — and the true scale of the killings could be larger, investigators said Monday. Niels Hoegel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders at a clinic in the northwestern town of Delmenhorst. But prosecutors have long said they believe he killed more people, last year putting the figure at 43 at least. The crimes came to light after Hoegel was convicted of attempted murder in another case. Authorities subsequently investigated hundreds of deaths, exhuming bodies of former patients in Delmenhorst and nearby Oldenburg. Oldenburg police chief Johann Kuehme said Monday authorities have now unearthed evidence of 84 killings in addition to the ones for which Hoegel was convicted. A man celebrating the Fourth of July died when he tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, Maine State Police say. Twenty-two-year-old Devon Staples of Calais had been setting off fireworks with friends on Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home, according to Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. At least 32 people have been arrested across Florida for trying to loot empty businesses and homes that have been evacuated in preparation for Hurricane Irma - 28 alone in Miami, according to local authorities. Two people burst into an Orlando sporting store and allegedly stole guns, before facing off with SWAT in a standoff. Shocking videos also emerged of gangs trying to break into stores and take advantage of deserted properties.
